How to Choose the Right Dog Breed for Your Lifestyle:

10 Questions Every Future Dog Owner Should Ask

All the dog breeds and breed mixes out there - which one is the best for you?

Bringing home a new dog is one of the most exciting decisions a family can make. However, it’s also easy to set yourself up for chaos. I see it all the time in my board-and-train program: lovely families with good intentions and a dog who simply isn’t the right match for their daily life. It’s not about “bad dogs.” It’s about the right dog for the right lifestyle.

Before you fall in love with a cute face online or a breeder’s enthusiastic sales pitch, take a breath. Grab a coffee and walk yourself through these ten questions. Be honest. Future-you (and your furniture) will thank you.

1. How active am I — truthfully, not hypothetically?

We all have a “version of ourselves” who hikes every weekend. Then there’s the Tuesday-night version who crawls into bed at 8 PM. High-drive herding and working breeds will expose the difference immediately. Pick a dog who fits your actual weekly rhythm.

2. How much daily time can I realistically give to training and enrichment?

Every breed needs training, but some require significantly more structure, supervision, and jobs to do. If you’ve only got 15–20 minutes a day to give, that’s totally fine, as long as the breed matches that reality.

3. What level of household energy will this dog be walking into?

A calm, quiet home suits some breeds beautifully. Meanwhile, a busy family home with kids, guests, and constant door activity suits others. Be honest about your household vibe. The dog will feel it immediately.

4. Do I want a social butterfly or a “my people only” kind of dog?

Some breeds were made to greet the world with a smile. Others bond deeply and stay selective about their social circle. Neither is better, but mismatched expectations can lead to confusion and stress for everyone.

5. How much grooming, shedding, or drool am I comfortable living with?

Double coats? Hypoallergenic curls? The “my entire wardrobe is now fur-textured” look? Grooming is a lifestyle, not a surprise. Pay attention to what your future dog will realistically require.

6. What’s my realistic monthly budget for care?

Some breeds cost more to feed. Some require regular grooming. Others may have medical predispositions. Many need professional training (hello, teenage phase). Being prepared financially saves stress and guilt down the road.

7. Do I have other pets the dog must get along with?

Livestock, cats, other dogs, backyard chickens… prey drive and herding instincts are very real. You can’t simply “train it out.” Choose a breed with instinct patterns that fit your environment.

8. What temperament traits do I need — not just what sounds cute on paper?

“Protective” sounds appealing until your delivery drivers fear your address. “Independent” sounds noble until you want a reliable recall. Get clear on what traits make your life easier — not just more interesting.

9. How much barking can my lifestyle (and neighbours) tolerate?

Some dogs narrate their whole day. Others barely whisper. Both are wonderful in the right home. But if you live in a townhouse, choose wisely unless you enjoy leaving apology muffins on your neighbour’s doorstep.

10. Am I fully prepared for all life stages — puppyhood, adolescence, adulthood, and senior years?

Everyone loves the adorable 8-week-old fluffball. But adolescence? That’s where the real relationship is built — through consistency, structure, and boundaries. Pick a breed whose long-term needs align with your long-term commitment.

Clarity Prevents Chaos

Choosing the right breed isn’t about picking the “cutest one” or the one your cousin swears is the best family dog. It’s about knowing your lifestyle, your household, your energy, and selecting a breed that thrives within that picture.

When families pick the right dog, training becomes easier. Behaviour issues are reduced, and the relationship feels natural rather than forced.

The Importance of Personalized Training

Personalized training is essential for creating a well-behaved, confident city dog. It helps you understand your dog’s unique needs and fosters a strong bond between you and your furry friend. With tailored training, you can address specific challenges and celebrate successes together.

Training isn’t just about commands; it’s about building trust and understanding. When you invest time in personalized training, you’re investing in a happier, healthier relationship with your dog.

Understanding Your Dog's Needs

Every dog is unique. They come with their own quirks, preferences, and personalities. Understanding these traits is vital. It allows you to provide the best environment for your dog to thrive.

For instance, some dogs may need more mental stimulation than others. Engaging their minds can prevent boredom and destructive behaviours. Activities like puzzle toys or training sessions can be a great way to keep them entertained.

Building a Strong Relationship

A strong relationship with your dog is built on trust and communication. Spend quality time together. Play, train, and explore. This not only strengthens your bond but also helps your dog feel secure in their new home.

Remember, a happy dog is a well-adjusted dog. They thrive on routine and love. Make sure you provide both.

Preparing for the Unexpected

Life is unpredictable. Be prepared for changes. Your dog may face health issues, behavioural challenges, or changes in their environment. Having a plan in place can help you navigate these situations smoothly.

Consider enrolling in training classes or seeking professional help if needed. It’s always better to be proactive than reactive.
