Dogs don’t just have emotions, they actively use them to navigate the world and communicate with us and we often too distracted and overlook this. And here’s where I’ll challenge you a bit: if your dog is “not listening,” it’s rarely a training issue first… it’s an emotional state issue.

Before you ask for obedience, ask:What is my dog feeling right now? Do I need to change the environment we are in or the stimulus that we are around?

Because a dog who is overwhelmed, anxious, or over-aroused cannot access the part of the brain responsible for learning, no matter how many treats you’re holding.

Understanding your dog’s emotional intelligence doesn’t mean lowering expectations, it means raising your awareness.

When you recognize that your dog:

• Reads your body language faster than your commands

• Makes decisions based on safety, not stubbornness
